The natural area stretches in the northwestern extremity of Călărași county, on the territory of the Fundeni commune and in the southeastern part of Ilfov county, on the administrative territories of the communes: Brănești, Cernica, Găneasa and that of the city of Pantelimon. The site is crossed by Autostrada Soarelui, the national road DN3 and the county road DJ103, which connects the village of Cernica with the city of Pantelimon.[4]

The Cernica Lake and Forest site (with an area of ​​3,744 ha.) was declared a special avifaunistic protection area by Government Decision no. 971 of October 5, 2011 (for the amendment and completion of Government Decision no. 1,284/2007 regarding the declaration of areas of special avifaunistic protection as an integral part of the European Natura 2000 ecological network in Romania).

biodiversity
Located in the continental and steppe geographical bioregion of the Romanian Plain, in the hydrographic basin of the Cernica and Pasărea rivers, the site has five types of natural habitats: Continental fresh waters (stagnant and flowing), Extensive cereal crops (including rotational crops with de-weeding), Improved meadows, Deciduous Forests and Swamps (belt vegetation), sedges, peatlands. The natural area provides resting, feeding, nesting and breeding conditions for various species of migratory birds, as well as favorable living conditions for several species of mammals, reptiles, amphibians and insects.
