China is no stranger to unique construction projects, on this episode be bring you a panda shaped solar farm.

Hong Kong based Green panda energy group is building solar farms in the shape of a panda.

Where does such a crazy idea come from? Ada Li Yan-tung a 15 year old presented it at a global forum, 2 years ago, which to her surprise they loved. She wanted to get the young Chinese population interested in sustainable energy and thought the image of the panda would do the trick.

Adding a playful element to the project and being one of China’s national treasures the panda image was quickly adopted as a theme for their solar installations. 100 of these panda shaped solar farms will be built in different panda designs.

Green Panda Energy Group wasted no time mocking up some designs for the solar farm. The first constructed is located in Shanxi province, China called Datong Panda Power Plant. Constructed at a cost of 52 million dollars, it is said to complete all of the solar farms 3 billion dollars will be needed. The Datong Panda power plant is a 50 megawatt solar array built across 247 acres or 100 hectares. This solar farm is the first installation under the United Nations Development Program.

Moving onto the 2nd solar farm of this project we see an artist rendering and the final result.
Completed in October 2017 this farm has a capacity of 60 megawatts or around enough power for 6000 homes for a year.

China plans to build these solar installations across what they are calling the “new silk road” which spans across 60 countries including Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia. As power is put in place they want to build new roads and bridges to stimulate trade in the region.

Currently China is the world’s leader in renewable energy and by 2020 are hoping to generate 110 gigawatts of solar power annually which can power more than 30 million homes.
