Mom's diary July 26 to August 3, 2023 - Pumpkin, the whole plant is edible - repairing the backpack

These days are wet, truly wet. It's raining most of the time. The sun comes out for maybe half an hour only to vanish again and rain starts over again. At least the pumpkins and zucchini now are growing faster and as soon as the rain stops for a bit, you see bees and bumblebees around searching for nectar and pollinating whatever is possible.

Pumpkin flowers: If there are no female pumpkin or zucchini flowers that need pollination, make sure to collect the male flowers. You can use them in stir-frys, fry them together with onions and use them as pasta sauce (kind of pesto), you can dehydrate them or freeze them to be used later. The stalks of the flowers are edible as well, and I usually dehydrate them and add them to my "green stuff"-glass, which gets powdered and is then used in soups, stews and sauces.

Pumpkin stalks and leaves: These can also be used for food. You need to first strip off the spiny parts. The stalks remain quite crispy, and the leaves can be used similar to kale. Of course, you can also dehydrate and freeze them.

What is incredible for me: when you do not cut the grass, there are so many herbs - like in this video oregano - that simply grows there. I think we all should let the grass grow to find out what we have in front of our home. Just let it grow, harvest what we need, and then we can cut it back and let it all grow anew.

In the sense of "Reuse - Repair - Recycle", after a long time using it damaged, I finally repaired my backpack. That's what rainy days are for :-) and once finished the sun came out and rewarded me with a wonderful rainbow.
