Photographer and night-sky enthusiast Paul Smith. Sprites, enormous flashes of light that flash high above thunderstorms, are his obsession. He led NASA scientist Dr. Burcu Kosar around the backroads of Oklahoma last October so she could catch one for herself. She had spent more than 15 years researching sprites, but she had never actually pursued one.
