The September 11, 2001 attacks were a series of coordinated terrorist actions by the extremist group Al-Qaeda in the United States. Nineteen hijackers seized control of four commercial airplanes, crashing two into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City and another into the Pentagon near Washington, D.C. The fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, crashed in Pennsylvania after passengers attempted to regain control. Nearly 3,000 people died, and the attacks had profound global impacts, leading to increased security measures, wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and a reshaping of international relations and counterterrorism efforts.
