Growing is all fun until you get pest and diseases on your plants and kill them. That pest is scale, it’s hard to treat and see.

Identification:
2 types of scales: 1. Armored and Soft scale. Armored scale has a protective shell over it and soft scales are larger and have white waxy substances.

In my case here I have armored scale and they usually can be spot on the bottom of the leaves. They are very small and very hard to find

There are thousands of types of scales so I won’t bore you, but scale is one of the most common pest issues on Desert Rose and cause all type of issues for the plant

Treatment:
There are several ways you can get rid of scales on your plant.
1. If infestation is little, you can pick them off and wipe off with paper towel
2. If some and a lot, spray with neem oil and repeat 2-3 times until they’re disappear
3. If you have massive infestation, I would recommend cutting the branches of infestations off and spray with neem oil

Remember to isolate from other plants so the scales don’t get transfer

And Finally, Preventions:
1. Spray neem oil and copper fungicide at the beginning of Spring and before winter. I also recommend spraying right after repotting and pruning as well.

We’ve identified the pest, treatment plans, and prevention methods, now let’s discuss what could be causing the scales:
1. High humidity
2. Lack of sun light
3. Inconsistent watering and fertilizing
4. A healthy plant will fight off pest and infestation better.
