Portuguese athlete Leandro Ramos produced a 'flipping' crazy javelin throw at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest that had fans labeling him as 'pure gold

Portuguese thrower Leandro Ramos left athletics fans scratching their heads after witnessing his 'flipping' crazy javelin somersault throw at the World Athletics Championships.

Running up to throw his first effort of the day in Group A of the men's javelin throw at the National Athletics Centre in Budapest, Ramos looked to be about to unfurl an orthodox attempt.

However, at the point of launching his javelin into the air, Ramos quite literally flipped the script, producing a stunning somersault that saw him leap off the ground and land squarely on his feet.

And it's safe to say the 22-year-old's flying effort got people at home off their seats cheering Ramos on, with one fan labeling the Portuguese athlete as "pure gold".

Another added: "Between this and McLeod’s long jump yesterday, the world championships are diversifying!" A third said: "This is amazing, but...why?"

A fourth said: "This is extra but I love it." And a fifth commented: "Leandro Ramos with a very unique Javelin throw technique. Just look at that flip and then the smooth landing."

However, despite winning the hearts of fans who witnessed his rather unique technique, it appears Ramos' efforts were all for naught. In group A, he recorded a throw of 74.03m, which saw him finish in 15th place, way off qualifying for the final.

And the javelin flip hasn't been the only mad incident to have happened so far at the World Athletic Championships either. Just a day prior, American sprinter Noah Lyles was involved in a buggy crash that thankfully resulted in no major injuries.

Bahamian sprinter Anthonique Strachan was caught on camera nearly leaping out of her skin after her 200m semi-final race when mascot Youhuu snuck up behind her to give her the fright of her life.

And then on the same evening, Jamaica's Carey McLeod accidentally slipped during his long jump final run-up, which resulted in him being launched into the air as if he was 'going into orbit'.
