How the Soviet Union Made the Largest Bomb on Earth?

During the 1950s, many global superpowers were increasing the production of nuke arsenal to grow stronger and hold their influence in the world. The Soviet Union, on the other hand, had a small armament of nuclear weapons and was falling behind the competition. Soviets needed something bigger, stronger, a bomb that could pack a punch and make the whole world fear them.As soon as engineers received an order to create such a bomb, they started working in the remote city of Sarov, a small city near Moscow built exactly for nuclear scientists. No existing bomb casings in the Soviet arsenal were big enough to fit in all the electronics and the main charge. That is why engineers had to create a custom-made casing from scratch by working day and night in a specialized facility.

The bomb was so big it needed its own secluded facility with a railway system built exactly to transport this bomb .Soviet leaders suddenly asked to reduce the power from 100 megatons to 50 megatons because it was too much even for the Soviet Union. The amount of nuclear energy would devastate the entire ecosystem. It didn’t take much time to give this job to a crew of TU-95, the Bear of the Soviet airforce, the only bomber that could lift up a bomb of up to 30 tons in weight — which is how much Tsar Bomba approximately weighed. Before the day of the drop, the entire body of a TU-95, including the blades of the propellers, was sprayed with a protective layer of pain that prevented the electronics from burning from the high radiation impact.

Finally, on the 30th of October, 1961, the airplane took off from an airfield in the Kola Peninsula and dashed to its target located in the Mityushikha Bay nuclear testing range. Once the plane got to 34,000 feet above the target, the crew released the bomb and rushed as far away as possible. The parachute worked perfectly, slowing the bomb down and winning the aircrew a couple of minutes to get out! At 11:32 Moscow time, the bomb exploded!

The whole world knew it was the Soviet Union and, frankly, Soviet leaders admitted to using this bomb, threatening to create even more of these. Although the bomb wasn’t made to be used as a weapon, it succeeded as a method of deterrence and showed the power of the Soviet Union!
