As Salaamu Alaikum! I’m Mustafaa Carroll, Convenor for the North Texas Chapter of Muslim Alliance for Black Lives (an ICNA Council for Social Justice initiative). I have entered into a partnership with Mr. Walid Khaldi, an independent film-maker, producer, director, and archivist to produce a documentary featuring a piece I have been working on entitled the “Roots of Islam in America”. Mr. Khaldi established a production film company entitled Golden Moon Films LLC. He is a historian with the Denton Black Film Festival where he produces short documentaries depicting the struggles of African American Civil Rights Pioneers.

This “Roots of Islam in America” documentary is a nuanced account of the evolution of the American Muslim community at the apex and intersection of the civil rights struggle. The documentary will present how the impetus for African American conversions to Islam were, in part, due to the desire for “freedom, justice and equality” as was the goal of the civil rights movement.

The documentary provides a holistic view of Islam in America, and attempts to be all inclusive of the various peoples, organizations, and sects that made significant historical contributions towards the establishment of Islam in America.

We are excited about the production of this series on the “Roots of Islam in America”. We plan to distribute this educational documentary widely via, Public media (PBS), Netflix, Hulu etc. as well as educational institutions. Our anticipated delivery date is February 15, 2024. Our production budget is $320K and we need your financial contribution help in bringing this production into fruition. You can send your tax-deductible contribution to ICNA Council for Social Justice and write in the memo line “Muslim Alliance for Black Lives (MABL). We are looking forward to your support.

Jazak Allah Khair. Thank you.
