Matt Kibbe and Lars Mapstead, Libertarian candidate for President, talk about the difficulties faced by presidential candidates not affiliated with either of the two major parties. Since these parties set the rules for debates and ballot access, it’s in their interest not to allow third party candidates to compete, and since all members of the federal government are either Democrats or Republicans, they have no incentive to fix it. It’s even possible for them to change the rules in the middle of the election. This means that even extremely popular and well-financed independent candidates have virtually no chance of success at the national level.
