October 1 Daily Devotion: How to walk humbly before God.
He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but… to walk humbly with thy God? Micah 6:8 KJV
It seems pretty plain, maybe even mundane. Yeah, yeah walk humbly. Ok, done, check it off the list and move on. But if you’re like me, you can’t help but ask the obvious. What does one do to walk humbly before God? What does it look like? How do you know if you are accomplishing this command? What practical steps can I do to walk humbly before God? And, in this day and age, the task of walking humbly is even more challenging because of a society that is all about “selfies” and is “hashtag me”, and is “look at what I can do” on whatever social media. Humility is the desired character trait of the past. Self-esteem has become far more important in the world today and our minds have been trained to look for self-promotion even if there is nothing of worth to promote. Walking humbly has become a humbling task to attempt.
It’s time to reprogram. Take a long look in the mirror. Literally and figuratively. And be honest, what you see is not what you really want to be. You want to look better. You want to do better. You want to avoid making any mistakes, let alone stupid ones. There are many things you wish you had already improved about yourself by now, but haven’t. It is good to acknowledge these things. And if you have been looking and haven’t found any faults in yourself then you are lying to yourself and The Almighty. You are flawed just like me, but probably not worse than me. These flaws are what remind us that we are down here for good reason and He is up there for good reason. “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8 KJV.
Your salvation is God’s finished work, not yours. That is humbling to know and also reassuring to know. Look in the mirror and know that you aren’t and God is.
