Panic over salt in China — people empty supermarkets shelves and buy out all salt in online stores
"Salt rush" (抢盐潮) started after Japan began dumping radioactive water into the Pacific Ocean from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. Earlier, the Chinese government banned the import of all aquatic products from Japan because Japanese authorities could not prove the safety of the dumped water. As portal hk01 notes, the Chinese are worried that food-grade sea salt will soon be contaminated with radiation.
Authorities claim that 90% of the salt is extracted from salt mines and lakes, so there will be enough supplies to meet demand and urge people to "buy salt rationally according to their needs".
