The New Horizons spacecraft is a NASA mission launched in January 2006 with the primary objective of studying the dwarf planet Pluto and its moons. It provided the first detailed images and data of Pluto when it conducted a historic flyby in July 2015, revealing its varied terrain, icy features, and intriguing geology. After the Pluto encounter, New Horizons continued its journey through the Kuiper Belt, a region beyond Neptune populated by icy bodies. In January 2019, it conducted a flyby of the Kuiper Belt object Arrokoth (also known as Ultima Thule), yielding insights into the formation of our solar system. The mission has expanded our understanding of distant icy worlds and their significance in planetary science.
