Date – Wednesday, August 23rd 2023 – St. Emilian of Autun

1. **Muslim Invasions in France:** Muslim invasions spread from Spain to various regions of France in 711, leading to an attack planned against Autun in 725.

2. **St. Emilian's Background:** St. Emilian of Autun, a Bishop from a noble family in Armonica, was known for courage, honor, magnanimity, and faith.

3. **Call to Defend Autun:** Learning of the Muslim invasion, St. Emilian called on strong men of faith to defend Autun against the threat.

4. **Exhortation to Battle:** St. Emilian summoned the people to the Cathedral, encouraging them to take up arms, marking themselves with the sign of the Cross and the armor of faith.

5. **March to Battle:** After a Mass and Communion, St. Emilian led the warriors to Autun. The Breton army achieved remarkable victories, saving Autun and defeating the infidel army.

6. **Battle of St. Forjand:** The Breton army saved Autun and defeated the infidel army at the battle of St. Forjand.

7. **Victory at St. Jean de Louis:** St. Emilian's army triumphed again at the battle of St. Jean de Louis, although the Saint was severely wounded in the process.

8. **St. Emilian's Sacrifice:** St. Emilian was fatally wounded while bravely fighting against the Muslim chief who led the enemy. He continued to encourage his soldiers until his last moments.

9. **Martyrdom and Cult:** St. Emilian died on August 22, 725, after being severely wounded in battle. He was beheaded by the Muslim chief. His relics were venerated, and his cult was confirmed by Pope Pius IX.

10. **Church's Approach:** The Church's rule against shedding blood was refined through exceptions like that of St. Emilian, who took up arms in defense of the Church and encouraged others to fight, ultimately sacrificing his life for the faith.
