TCNW 749: Howard McNear as Acting Specialist

I'm always looking for things we may never have seen related to our friends in Mayberry. That being stories, photos, articles, or just about anything touching on either the characters on The Andy Griffith Show or the actors who played them.

I recently ran across an article from the Los Angeles Times from January 12, 1960 titled "Howard McNear as Acting Specialist" and felt like I had struck gold. There isn't any talk about his time on The Andy Griffith Show because McNear first appeared as Floyd in the episode "Mayberry Goes Hollywood" on January 2, 1961, almost a year after this article was published. He had already been a barber on TV tough because he appeared as "Andy the barber" on season 2, episode 8 of "Leave it to Beaver" called "The Shave" (November 20, 1958). It was a memorable yet fairly small role that *may* have paved the way to Mayberry.

I realize I'm a bit biased toward this actor but I hope you'll enjoy hearing a bit more about him and his career before "Floyd." I've done nine episodes of the podcast about Howard McNear but since I've done about 740 episode that are not about him, I think I'm balancing pretty well.
