Six children and two adults are being rescued by the military after one of the cables on their cable car snapped, leaving the car suspended over a ravine in northwest Pakistan.

Local residents spotted the car stranded 274m (900ft) above the Allai valley, and alerted authorities. Rescue helicopters have reached the car, which has been left hanging by a single rope, but conditions are not ideal due to strong winds and a worry that the helicopter’s rotor blades could further destabilize the cable car.

The people have been trapped for over four hours at the time of writing, and officials are currently working on an alternative rescue plan involving reaching the car by ropes, should the helicopter rescue fail.
