The Man Who Was Cursed With Immortality |
In Hindu mythology, there are seven immortal beings known as the "Chiranjivi" or "Chiranjeevi." These are individuals who are believed to be blessed with longevity and are said to still be alive, even in the present age. Here are the seven Chiranjivi according to Hindu mythology:
Ashwatthama: Ashwatthama was a character from the epic Mahabharata. He was a great warrior and the son of Dronacharya, the royal teacher of the Kuru princes. He was cursed with immortality by Lord Krishna after committing a heinous act during the Kurukshetra War.
King Mahabali: King Mahabali, also known as Bali, was a virtuous demon king who ruled over the earth. He was known for his generosity and devotion. Lord Vishnu took the form of Vamana, a dwarf Brahmin, and asked for three paces of land. Vamana then covered the entire universe with his three steps, and King Mahabali was sent to the netherworld. However, he was granted the boon of being able to visit his subjects once a year, which is celebrated as Onam in Kerala, India.
Vyasa: Vyasa, also known as Veda Vyasa or Krishna Dvaipayana Vyasa, is one of the central figures in Hindu mythology. He is credited with composing the Mahabharata, as well as compiling and arranging the Vedas. Vyasa is considered immortal due to his divine contributions to knowledge and scripture.
Hanuman: Hanuman is a revered deity in Hinduism, known for his unwavering devotion to Lord Rama. He played a crucial role in the Ramayana epic. Hanuman is believed to be immortal due to his divine nature and his eternal service to Lord Rama.
Vibhishana: Vibhishana was a character from the Ramayana, the younger brother of the demon king Ravana. He was known for his righteousness and devotion to Lord Rama. After the defeat of Ravana, Vibhishana was crowned as the king of Lanka. He is considered immortal due to his devotion to dharma and his association with Lord Rama.
Kripacharya: Kripacharya was a renowned teacher and warrior in the Mahabharata. He served as a royal teacher to the Kuru princes and fought on the side of the Kauravas during the Kurukshetra War. He is considered one of the Chiranjivi due to his longevity and wisdom.
Parashurama: Parashurama is a legendary warrior and the sixth avatar of Lord Vishnu. He is known for his skill with the axe (parashu) and his role in purging the world of corrupt Kshatriya rulers. Parashurama is considered immortal due to his divine nature and his continued presence in various scriptures and traditions.
These Chiranjivi are revered figures in Hindu mythology and are often cited as examples of individuals who have attained long life or even immortality due to their deeds, virtues, and associations with divine beings.
