The beaver is one of the world's largest rodents. Beavers come in two different types: American and Eurasian. The American beaver lives in North America, while the Eurasian beaver lives in Europe and Asia. Both species enjoy freshwater lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams near forests. Their number decreased dramatically in the twentieth century as a result of widespread hunting and habitat destruction. After European colonists entered North America, the number of beavers decreased from 60 million to 6-12 million animals. These fascinating creatures are one of the only species that can reinvent their habitat and adapt it to their needs by building dams, canals, and lodges.
