A state of emergency has been declared in Southern California as tropical Storm Hilary hits the state.

Millions of people are under flash flood warnings as torrential rains and high winds pummel towns.

It is the first such storm to hit the state in 84 years - with the record rains flooding Los Angeles and desert areas like Palm Springs and Death Valley.

School classes and flights have been cancelled, with landslides, downed trees and flooded homes reported.
