Hafiz Ibn Jarir al-Tabari has narrated the revelation of this Surah from Hazrat Abdullah Bin Abbas (R.A.) that some leaders of Makkah sent two men to the Jewish scholars of Madinah to find out that these verses of the Torah and the Gospel What do scholars say about the Prophet's (peace be upon him) claim of prophethood? The Jewish scholars asked him to ask Hazrat Muhammad Mustafa (peace be upon him) three questions. If he answers them correctly, then it should be understood that he is indeed a prophet of Allah Ta'ala and if he cannot answer correctly, it will mean that his claim of prophethood is not valid. The first question was to describe the strange incident of those youths who once left their city and hid in a cave to avoid shirk. Others tell the story of a man who traveled all over the world from east to west. Third, ask them what the reality of the soul is. So these two men returned to Makkah, and taking the people of their community with them, they asked the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) these three questions. The answer to the third question has come in the previous Surah (85: 17). And in response to the first two questions, this Surat was revealed, in which the incident of the youth hiding in the cave is described in detail, they are called Companions of the Cave. Kahf means cave in Arabic, Ashab al-Kahf means the people of the cave, and the surah is called Surah Al-Kahf after the name of this cave. In response to the second question, at the end of the Surah, the incident of Dhul-Qarnain, who traveled to the East and West, has been described.
Apart from this, in the same surah, the incident of Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him) has also been described, in which he visited Hazrat Khidr (peace be upon him), and traveled with him for some time. These three events are the main topic of this surah. In addition to these, the Christians had declared Jesus (peace be upon him) as the son of God, in this Surah there is a special denial of him, and promises have been made to those who deny the truth, and to those who believe in the truth. Good news has also been given.
The virtues of reciting Surah Kahf have been mentioned in hadiths. Especially on Fridays, its recitation has gained great merit, and that is why it has been customary for religious elders to make special arrangements for its recitation on Fridays.
