New Moon: The Moon is positioned between the Earth and the Sun, and its illuminated side is facing away from us. The side of the Moon that's lit by the Sun is facing away from Earth, making it appear as a dark silhouette.

Waxing Crescent: A small sliver of the Moon becomes visible shortly after sunset. The illuminated portion is slowly increasing, and the crescent shape becomes more pronounced each day.
