Northern Fleet Aviation continues to fulfill combat duty tasks on Arctic Islands

▫️At Rogachevo airfield on Yuzhny Island of the Novaya Zemlya archipelago and Nagurskaya airfield on Alexandra Land island of the Franz Josef Land archipelago, the aviation of the Northern Fleet Air Force and Air Defence has held a change of duty forces and continues to perform special tasks to protect the state border of the Russian Federation in the Arctic airspace.

▫️Crews of MiG-31 BM fighter-interceptors, Su-24 bombers and Su-33 ship-based fighters arrived on the Arctic islands, having conducted a change of duty forces.

▫️ Major General Igor Churkin, Chief of Staff of Russian Air Force and Air Defence of the Northern Fleet, arrived on the island to check the conditions of service of his subordinates.

💬 'The Arctic is a rather remote region of our country, at the same time we are the only ones who fulfill the tasks of operational-tactical aviation in the northernmost Arctic latitudes. The airplanes, operating here, are designed for various tasks, including air combat, fighting against sea, surface and ground targets', Major General Igor Churkin said.

▫️ Carrying out combat duty and performing special tasks by Air Force and Air Defence aircrafts on the Arctic islands makes it possible to significantly expand the area of application of the Northern Fleet aviation in the Arctic and significantly increases the zone of controlled airspace over the waters of the Northern Sea Route.

▫️ The performance of special tasks by the Northern Fleet aviation on the Arctic islands in the modern history of Russia began with pilot-combat duty on the Novaya Zemlya archipelago from January 2021 and is carried out on a permanent basis.
