In this puppy training video Ryan Gwilliam teaches you how to teach your puppy to take treats nicely. Once your puppy gets the basic concept you can teach your puppy to stay behind a line or boundary for longer and longer periods.

I think of it almost like a puppy timeout, except there no doors or gates in the way. This way the puppy is staying because you asked them to instead of being forced to because they are in a crate for example.

This difference is huge in your puppy's mind, and will drastically increase the effectiveness of the puppy "timeout".
