You may lose inches before you lose pounds
You may lose inches before you lose pounds OR you may be someone who sees pounds drop right away, again, E V E R Y O N E is different!!
Many of us want to see numbers move down. That's why we're here after all!! What happens if the number goes up? 🙀 Weight loss is rarely a straight path and the scale is a terrible day-to-day measure of whether you are losing weight or not. 👎
SO many things can affect the number you see:
Water retention from high sodium or carbs the night before
Hormonal monthly weight gain (in women)
Medication
Alcohol
Stress
The average adult's weight can fluctuate up to 5-6 lbs in a given day. 👈Remember that!
It is unrealistic to expect the scale to go down day after day. It just won’t happen.
✳️A COUPLE OF REASONS WHY YOU MAY NOT SEE THE SCALE MOVE RIGHT AWAY:
💦Whoosh effect—as the cells empty of fat, the body replaces it with water, which shows no change on the scale. AT FIRST. This can go on for days or even a week. Then suddenly, whoosh, you seem to lose several pounds overnight. This is because the body finally let go of the water and the fat cell has shrunk. Pretty cool, huh?
💪Muscle is more dense than fat. So your scale may not move quickly at all - but your measurements will.
Think about a pound of marshmallows (fat) vs. a pound of apples (muscle). Both weigh the same, yet carrying around a pound of marshmallows is going to take up A LOT more room in your jeans than carrying around a pound of apples.
Since a pound of muscle is smaller in size than a pound of fat (fat takes up approximately 4x the space of muscle tissue) it's very possible to LOOK and FEEL slimmer even if your weight remains the same!!!! Especially at the beginning of a weight loss journey.
🤷♀️SO SHOULD YOU WEIGH?
Yes and No. IF you are someone who feels defeated when the scale doesn’t move, ditch it. I did this for years to preserve my sanity. I kept a pair of “No lie” jeans, the kind that doesn’t stretch and doesn't give any….those were my measure of progress. You can do that, take regular measurements, or take regular pictures. Any of those methods will show your progress. 💯
