Felix Baumgartner holds the world record for the highest and fastest freefall jump from space. On October 14, 2012, he leaped from a capsule attached to a high-altitude balloon at an altitude of 128,100 feet (39,045 meters). During the jump, he reached a maximum speed of 843.6 miles per hour (1,357.6 kilometers per hour), becoming the first person to break the sound barrier without vehicular power. This extraordinary achievement was part of the Red Bull Stratos mission.
