What if you could visit the core of a planet? That’s the goal of NASA’s Psyche mission, which will explore a unique asteroid that may be the exposed metal-rich heart of an ancient world. The asteroid, called 16 Psyche, is located in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, and is about three times farther away from the sun than Earth. NASA’s Psyche spacecraft will launch in 2022 and arrive at the asteroid in 2026. It will study the asteroid’s structure, composition, magnetic field, and history, and try to answer some of the mysteries of planetary formation.
