UK police forcibly detain autistic girl for saying ‘lesbian’

A gang of UK police officers dragged a 16-year-old autistic girl from her home after she made an innocent remark about one of them. Footage of the incident was captured by the girl’s family, and has drawn widespread condemnation.

The girl had been escorted home by police after reportedly being 'intoxicated’ on a night out in Leeds. Footage shows her cowering in a cupboard as seven police officers crowd round her.

An argument had arisen because the girl had said one of the officers ‘looked like her lesbian nana.’ This was quickly explained by the girl’s mother – she meant the remark literally, and was referring to her actual relative, who is a lesbian.

Ignoring this, the officers forcibly arrested the girl for what they laughably called a ‘homophobic public order offence.’ The girl can be heard having a panic attack as she is manhandled by the officers.

Amid the backlash and calls for the officers to face charges themselves, West Yorkshire Police released a statement, claiming it ‘takes its responsibilities around the welfare of young people taken into custody and around neurodiversity very seriously.’
