Moon Phases Nasa Space view
Moon phases refer to the changing appearance of the Moon as it orbits around the Earth. The Moon's illumination and its position relative to the Earth and the Sun cause these phases. There are eight primary moon phases:
New Moon: The Moon is positioned between the Earth and the Sun, so the side illuminated by the Sun is facing away from Earth, making the Moon appear completely dark.
Waxing Crescent: A small crescent of the Moon becomes visible as more of its illuminated side becomes visible from Earth.
First Quarter (Waxing Half-Moon): Half of the Moon's illuminated side is visible, resembling a half-moon shape.
Waxing Gibbous: More than half, but not all, of the Moon's illuminated side is visible, creating a shape between a half-moon and a full moon.
Full Moon: The entire illuminated side of the Moon is visible from Earth, creating a bright and round appearance.
Waning Gibbous: Similar to the waxing gibbous phase, but the illuminated portion is decreasing.
Last Quarter (Waning Half-Moon): Half of the Moon's illuminated side is visible, but the opposite side compared to the first quarter.
Waning Crescent: A small crescent of the Moon becomes visible as the illuminated portion continues to shrink.
These phases repeat in a predictable cycle, roughly taking about 29.5 days to complete. The changing angles between the Moon, Earth, and Sun cause the variations in the Moon's appearance.
