The Media Narrative Refuses to Ask Lahaina Residents What They Know and See

The Lahaina wildfires currently affecting the state have emerged as the deadliest natural catastrophe since a devastating 1960 tsunami that claimed 61 lives. A more tragic tsunami occurred in 1946, resulting in the deaths of over 150 individuals on the Big Island. This latter disaster spurred the establishment of a comprehensive emergency system across the entire territory, complete with sirens that undergo monthly testing to ensure their effectiveness.

However, numerous survivors have conveyed that they were neither alerted by sirens nor informed in a timely manner to adequately prepare for the wildfires. Instead, many only realized the imminent danger when they witnessed flames or heard explosions nearby.

AP reports that one resident, who tragically lost her home in the fires, emphasized the absence of any forewarning: "There was no warning. There was absolutely none. Nobody came around. We didn't see a fire truck or anybody."

This situation underscores the challenges in effectively disseminating emergency notifications and the need for continuous improvement in disaster preparedness measures to mitigate the impact of such catastrophic events.
