For months the Greens have been piling on the pressure for governments to take a much tougher action on soaring rents. The party’s been demanding a national freeze or cap on what landlords can charge their tenants. On Friday the Reserve Bank Governor shot down that idea. Philip Lowe – who’s about to finish up in the role – said in the long run, capping rents will only make the housing crisis worse by driving out investment. He says more supply is the answer, and the Prime Minister agrees. On Wednesday, National Cabinet is set to agree on steps to boost the number of homes being built. Renters’ rights will also be discussed. It’s looming as a critical meeting, both to help ease the housing crisis, and the political pressure on Labor.

The Insiders panel Annabel Crabb, David Crowe and Sarah Ison discuss this and more. David Speers interviews Nationals Leader David Littleproud about why they’ve chosen to oppose Labor’s 60-day medicine dispensing legislation, tension in the regions over renewable energy and the Coalition’s nuclear energy push. Mike Bowers talks the week in pictures with Alex Ellinghausen.
