High Testosterone Makes Young Men Submissive?

Two research studies show that high testosterone in young men affects male-male dynamics. Stirling Cooper reviews the evidence that turns our conventional ideas about testosterone on its head.

The first study, conducted at a Japanese university with a rugby team, found that higher testosterone levels among low-status individuals led to strategic submission to more senior members. However, among the most senior participants, higher testosterone was associated with lower acquiescence. This suggests that testosterone affects social decision-making differently depending on an individual's status within a hierarchy.

The second study focused on farmers in the Bolivian Amazon region. These individuals engage in high-energy expenditure activities such as tree chopping for horticultural purposes. The study found that these farmers experienced a significant increase in testosterone levels during tree chopping, indicating that testosterone may play a role in maximizing productivity rather than traditional male-male competition.

Both studies challenge the idea that high testosterone levels lead to dominance-seeking behavior and male-male competition. Instead, testosterone may influence strategic social behavior and productivity. Stirling suggests that engaging in physical activities like tree chopping may help boost testosterone levels.

Overall, these studies provide new insights into the relationship between testosterone, hierarchies, and physical activity.
