Pastor Rebecca Todd Peters of the Presbyterian Church (USA) in the says that bible verses like Psalms 139 (For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made) have nothing to say about abortion, Peters shares her disgust that Christians try to use it in that way, saying “I refuse to cede the sacredness of Scripture or its interpretation to those who would wield it as a weapon.”

Then, she shockingly concludes: "I, too, feel that I am known by God in these ways, as a woman who has borne two children. I can affirm that I felt something sacred happening in my gestating body during those pregnancies. I can also attest that I felt God’s presence with me as I made the decision to end two pregnancies and I felt no guilt, no shame, no sin.”

Sermon preached to The Community Church of Chapel Hill Unitarian Universalist in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, wearing a pink stole emblazoned with a Planned Parenthood logo
