Lil Tay, who rose to stardom as a rapper and influencer on social media, has died at 14, according to a message shared on her verified Instagram account on Wednesday.

The teen rapper, whose real name is Claire Hope, was 9 when she gained national attention for her controversial videos, which flaunted an extravagant lifestyle and went viral on social media.

"It is with a heavy heart that we share the devastating news of our beloved Claire's sudden and tragic passing. We have no words to express the unbearable loss and indescribable pain," the statement said. "This outcome was entirely unexpected, and has left us all in shock."

The statement also announced that Lil Tay's brother, Jason Tian, also died and that their deaths are under investigation. It is unclear where and when they died, but Lil Tay is a native of Canada, who moved to Los Angeles in 2018 to pursue opportunities in the entertainment industry.

"Her brother's passing adds an even more unimaginable depth to our grief," the statement continued. "During this time of immense sorrow, we kindly ask for privacy as we grieve this overwhelming loss, as the circumstances surrounding Claire and her brother's passing are still under investigation. Claire will forever remain in our hearts, her absence leaving an indescribable void that will be felt by all who knew and loved her."
