Do The Right Thing - 6

In Psalm 23:4, David says he finds comfort in Yahweh’s staff and His rod. The first part of this teaching examines that verse to understand the words as originally intended by the Hebrew writer. Somehow, David finds comfort only in BOTH the staff of support and protection AND the rod of authority and discipline. It appears that David was sure that he needed both the rod and the staff to help him stay in a place of honor and integrity where he could do the right thing.

This teaching examines the life of Bible heroes in light of this concept that we need both God’s support and His discipline to either do the right thing in the first place or come back to the right thing after a failure. We can recall all the times that Abraham, Moses, David, and Peter did the right thing under the most difficult of circumstances. But, we also remember that they did not always do the right thing. When they did not do the right thing, it’s interesting to see the different kinds of rod that God used to get them back on track.
