News For Today: Synthetic Lab Grown Chicken!

Lab-grown meat, also known as synthetic meat, has been approved for sale in the United States by both the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) and the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). The first synthetic meat to receive approval is lab-grown chicken, produced by replicating animal cells without the need for animal slaughter. Two companies, Upside Foods and Good Meat, have been given the green light to market their cell-cultivated or cultured meat in the United States.

Lab-grown meat offers several benefits, including saving time, money, resources, and reducing animal cruelty associated with traditional animal farming. It eliminates the need for water, food, and space required to raise and house animals. The process involves growing meat in steel tanks using cells obtained from living animals or stored cells from a special bank. Upside Meats produces large sheets of meat that are then shaped into chicken cutlets and sausages.

While lab-grown chicken has been approved, it is more expensive than regular chicken and cannot be farmed in quantities sufficient to meet the demand for traditional meat. The initial focus for the companies is to serve their lab-grown meat in select restaurants for experimentation and public feedback. It will take time to address the challenges of scaling up production and reducing costs before these products become available in grocery stores.

Despite the claims that lab-grown meat has the same nutritional value as regular meat, the speaker expresses skepticism about consuming synthetic meat. They draw a comparison to other controversial food items, such as high fructose corn syrup, which is legal in the United States but considered harmful by some. The speaker suggests that the long-term effects of lab-grown meat on human health might only become apparent years later, citing examples like smoking and vaping.
