I forgot to do the unboxing of the most exciting Steam Iron ever made yesterday. So I'll do that this time... maybe. Then I'll work on more book covers. Whether that means gluing, ironing, measuring, whatever.

Trying New Measurements
PhLo
Now that I know the measurements I used on the last book need to be adjusted I'll cover another book with that in mind. Yay, the $10 iron arrived, so I can use it with the fabric and backing.

One Book per Epoch
PhLo
The same book I previously worked on a few days ago still has a bunch of stuff needing to be done. I can't even remember what all it needs. Let's just take a look and complete the next logical step or two. The sun might burn out before I finish this book, at the rate I'm going. At least I found an iron I can use.

Photo Phabrics
PhLo
Before I continue making the cover for the latest book I need to choose a fabric. It has been a while since I have updated my photo catalog of my fabric collection. Once I have a gallery with all the fabrics, I need not dig through my bins to look for the best pattern. I'll still need to dig to get the one I have selected, but at least I can do the selection via photo swatches. Maybe all I will do today is take photos of fabric.

Merry DeskMess

It's been Mr. Ages since I moused around with bookbinding or anything creative. Mrs. Brisby decided not to visit due to my lack of motivation. I don't even know if I'll actually do anything, but I want to start a stream since I took so long to set up my craft station. It's a mega mess because I haven't used it. Maybe all I will do is assess what the next step should be for a stack of books. Gotta start somewhere, or not at all.

Book Sanding VIII
PhLo
Bookbinding is currently my primary crafting hobby. Many books are cut and in need of alignment and edge smoothing via sanding. I use a belt sander and various, simple jigs. Mostly it is a process done by hand, and ultimately I have to trust my eyes for the end result. This is one of my least favorite steps in the process because it is time-consuming and difficult to get right. For music I listen to retro video game music from the 16-bit era.

I'll try using vdo.ninja's native app today to see how it compares to my normal setup. For music I listen to retro video game music from the 16-bit era.

Book Sanding IV

This will be a short stream since my friend is on the way over in a couple hours. Many books are still cut and in need of alignment and edge smoothing via sanding. I use a belt sander and various, simple jigs. Mostly it is a process by hand, and ultimately I have to trust my eyes for the end result. I have done bookbinding for about eight years. This is one of my least favorite steps in the process because it is time-consuming and difficult to get right. I'll mostly use the same streaming setup as last time. However, the Insta360 camera needs a revisit, so I'll use 100% phones as cameras through VDO.Ninja today. I revamped details of my OBS scenes last night to look a little more consistent and pleasing to [my] eye. For music I listen to retro video game music from the 16-bit era.

This is one of my least favorite steps in the process because it is time-consuming and difficult to get right. I'll use essentially the same IRL setup as last time. Hopefully my camera doesn't freeze a bunch of times. I semi-permanentely mounted the long USB extension to the ceiling inside, toward the door, prior to the stream, so I won't have to restring it every time. I also changed the audio setup slightly, simplifying the cords. A random graphical frame was added around the cameras. For music I listen to retro video game music from the 16-bit era.

It should at least work for this stream, though maybe not for hiking ones (because something always goes wrong). For music I listen to retro video game music from the 16-bit era.

Book Sanding & BBQ
PhLo
It's a little bit too nice today, as in super hot. But one of these days I need to work on some books. I have a ton waiting to have their edges sanded smooth. So why not today? Well, if mosquitoes answer that question, I might end early. Rather than spend a bunch of time setting up the stream I'll start the stream and set up while I'm already live. Ended up smelling BBQ on the air and did a quick one myself on stream. Pretty scuffed, but oh well. Food. Eat. Stuff.

The Biggest Mess
PhLo
It has been a long time since I worked on bookbinding. My craft table is a mess. Continuing where I left off, I'll slowly cut more book edges with my plough.

Finnish Monkey Help Finish
PhLo
Monkeys aren't as slow as sloths by a longshot. Does this mean I will get more books cut tonight? I slept all day from staying up all night Tuesday, a confusing cycle. Per Leo's suggestion, I worked on some retro video game emotes for my Kick channel. Current selections now include: Alucard, Batman, Bonk, Contra, Kirby, Link, Luigi, Mario, Megaman, Metroid, Mushroom & Sonic. For music I listen to retro video game music from the 16-bit era.

Sloth Speed Bookbinding
PhLo
Once upon a time, time passed faster for everyone else but me, and then I got old. All that stuff happened while I was working on books. Ok, not really, but basically. Back to cutting some books. Going to do a standing stream to start out because of back pain. Not sure how long I'll be able to go this session. I also stayed up all night, so that's a thing. It also snowed last night, thus the seemingly unrelated title screen photo. For music I listen to retro video game music from the 16-bit era.

Mirror Sharp Slicery
PhLo
I haven't been cutting books for a few days because I noticed my cutting blade needs to be sharpened. The first sign is that small gouges are left in the book surface. I can sand these minor gouges and scratches out, but it's easier to get a smoother cut than try to sand them out. I use a mirror, sandpaper and a little water to sharpen my cutter. For music I listen to retro video game music from the 16-bit era.

Spine Glue
PhLo
In this fourth bookbinding episode, I prepare to glue the spines of twelve books that I previously aligned in book presses. The masking tape I used to secure the linen tapes was awful, so I'll retape them with the drafting tape I normally use. I forgot to cut mull for each book on the previous episode, so I'll start with that.

Clamping Books
PhLo
In today's episode I show the completed, large cabin journal. In spite of the panic during the cover gluing process in the previous episode the journal turned out great. Next I aligned the signatures of twelve sewn books and clamped them in book presses in preparation for gluing the spines.
I am currently multi-streaming on Kick, DLive, Odysee, Glimesh & Trovo. Some of the platforms are just for nostalgia or experimentation. I would like to add Rumble to the livestreaming mix, so please give me a follow here if you want to see my content live on Rumble, rather than uploaded much later.

Finally Doing a Cover
PhLo
To my surprise, it has been about a year and a half since I last worked on a book cover. At least that's what my spreadsheet shows. Perhaps it has a few missing lines. The book being worked on in this video is a special journal made for my parents' cabin. I am hoping to visit soon, and the current journal is completely full. I have been working on this journal for a long time, but have put off finishing it until now.
The last step of gluing the cover pieces together and then attaching the text block was once the most stressful step of bookbinding. It became less stressful for several years after creating an ironed-out process. In this rare case I returned to experimentation, uncertainty and stress. Since the book is large I dreamed up varied spine engineering to hopefully support its extra weight.
Everything was going smoothly with the cover fabrication until the very end. Things didn't work out quite as I hoped, and it was a near disaster. I rolled with the punches and produced a result that will hopefully turn out acceptable. It was a good learning experience, and I'll have some new ideas to try next time.

Making a ComeBackBook
PhLo
After a long break from livestreaming I decided to get back into it. In this episode the cabin journal cover was started. The book boards were glued double-thick off camera beforehand. The boards were cut to size and sanded. Book cloth was made from painting canvas.
This is an unedited livestream session, so unless you enjoy the relaxing vibe, you'll want to scrub through to find points of interest. I might eventually add chapters to uploads if anyone cares about them.
