As before 1860, we in the United States are sundering. Our intensifying disagreements threaten to unmake us as one people. This is because unprecedented numbers of Americans have embraced the pursuit of an earthly paradise over the preservation of personal freedom. As these true believers are constitutionally incapable of live-and-let-live toleration, of traditional American political moderation, divisions deepen.
