Desperate man seeks the ISS - can I receive it with my home made antenna

So, earlier today I received the ISS loud and clear despite only using a Diamond SRH771 antenna on the TYT UV380 with OpenGD77 satellite tracking. Surely a better, directional antenna with 6/8dB gain would do a better job. Easy, right?
