Newborn gosling left behind by parents finds foster home
This adorable little fellow hatched a day late and was left behind when his parents and siblings took to the water. They must have believed that the egg would not hatch. Luckily, a caring family saw what happened and watched for the parents' return. When it became clear that they were long gone, the family took him to the local veterinarian. Named Downie, after Tragically Hip singer, Gordon Downie, he was fostered with the veterinarian's family until he could be taken to a wildlife rehab centre. Here, he makes his way through the lawn, learning to eat grass and insects. He has no trouble finding food, but stairs are too big a challenge for his tiny legs. Downie grew strong enough over the summer to be released into the wild in time for migration.
