It’s an All Too Familiar Reason

Evening chores on our small family farm, talking about why @MattWalsh (or really his wife) wants goats and why ours would be the perfect addition to their home.

This time of year most of our farm chores get done in the cool of the day. When the heat index is over 100°F we’re lucky if we can get outside before the sun goes down. When we do, however, it is magical, and that golden hour of the day leaves us just enough light to knock out chores before we have to get the flashlights out.

On the agenda for this evening was banding two of our bucklings from the spring kidding season. Banding is our preferred method of castration, which is necessary if you want to be 100% certain their genes don’t get passed on. Goats are notorious escape artists and when it comes to breeding they’re determined little critters. Castration ensures that there are no accidents. Now that Bucky and Cap are wethered they officially become pets-with-a-purpose. Wethers are great additions to your farm because goats are herd animals and always need one or two companions, and if a goat ever needs to be isolated from the rest of the herd you can keep a wether with them with no risk of accidental breeding.

It just so happens that right before we started our chores Megan made an interesting discovery while browsing the internet. Matt Walsh, a popular political pundit, had made a post on his social media page that unbeknownst to him his wife was looking into goats. Boy if that doesn’t sound familiar; it has happened to us and it may have happened to you, too. Apparently, he has “lost” every battle in his house when it comes to animals – dogs, chickens, whatever else – but he’s convinced it won’t happen with the goats. Suuuuure it won’t. It just goes to show that chickens truly are the homestead gateway drug. You bring them home with the anticipation of “free” eggs and before long you’re buying acreage and trying to grow your own food. Truth be told I can’t think of a better life.

Matt, I want you to know that I have two adorably wonderful little guys who are ready to move on to another home. They’ll be perfect additions to your burgeoning homestead. Just let me know when you guys want to come pick them up.
