A Crap Guide to D&D [5th Edition] goblins😱😱❗
Not really, actually. As hilarious as the videos are, they also have a strange sense of honesty; They are what it says on the tin. These videos are meant to be purely satirical, as Bram Haenen said, bringing metas to the light and making fun of them through his hyper-aggressive persona. His Wizard video, which I’m sure you’ve seen, is probably the most straightforward of his videos: Just cast Fireball.
Obviously, you’d be hard-pressed to create a Wizard who can just cast fireball and it certainly would be a murderhobo build over everything else. Solving all of your fantastical problems with Fireball is like solving all your real-life problems by casting fist.
I joke, don’t do that.
JoCat even adds a disclaimer at the beginning of every single one of his videos, including the one you’ve listed, claiming that his Crap Guide series is indeed made purely to satire builds and characters who probably took this approach in the past. If anything, he encourages you to play the game your way. The Crap Guide to D&D series isn’t meant to be used as an actual guide.
If you want a decent guide to the mechanics of D&D with some comedy and creativity, I suggest looking up Zee Bashew, the Gnomish fellow (I think his character is Gnomish?) who helped Jocat in his Wizard video. His videos are still comedic and creative, but very informative on options for builds or actions you might not have considered. If you want a straightforward guide, Handbooker Helper, made by the cast of Critical Role, does a good job of teaching you the absolute basics in seconds. If you have the free time and want podcasts of people talking about D&D, which is a very good source of knowledge about the mechanics, builds and the hobby itself, I’d suggest Nerdarchy, Dungeoncast and Dungeon Dudes. I’m sure there are more I’ve forgotten, but those are the ones I know off the top of my head.
However, please be aware that character builds and mechanics can be a sticky subject. All opinions are just that and shouldn’t be taken as law. Opinions between gamers will always vary, there is no right way to view the game. Please play D&D the way you find most comfortable and fun for you; We all have our own ways of enjoying the hobby.
I hope this helps, thanks for the A2A.
