In the early 19th century, the exploration of the Antarctic region was an ambitious and challenging endeavor.

It was a time when the mysteries of the icy continent intrigued intrepid explorers who sought to push the boundaries of human knowledge.

As a distinguished oceanographer, Bellingshausen was selected to command the Russian circumnavigation of the globe in 1819–1821, planned to investigate the Southern Sea and to find land in South Pole, challenging James Cook's encounter that it was difficult to track down land in the southern ice-fields.
On August 4, 1821 Russian Antarctic Expedition led by Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen returns to Kronshtadt after becoming the first recorded voyage to circumnavigate Antarctica.
