Personal insight: Why is surfing so important to me?

Firstly its a way to disconnect from everything and put my attention completely on something else. It moves the needle when I need it to, and reframes my position relative to my business and everything in my life. I never understood the importance of that until I really saw the power of it.

Secondly its challenging. I couldn’t think of something more challenging on multiple fronts for me. I used to rock climb in the desert and loved that challenge, but surfing is something really difficult to describe unless you try it. It pushes you to face your fears. To look at a 300 foot wall of water in both directions 4ft, 5ft, 6ft, sometimes 8ft high, and decide to turnt and ride it.

Thirdly, it pushes me. I can’t control the ocean I can only harness what is there. If I fight it is doesn’t work with me, if I use what it has, I can benefit and have a great experience. I of course have to act, paddle hard, prep for the conditions and position myself for the best advantage to ride, but more importantly its the combination of what is there, using what is front of me to have an incredible journey.

Maybe you get some insight from this, maybe you don’t for me it certainly gives me a refreshing perspective on everything. No wave is the same. No ocean or ocean I surf around the world is the same. Life and business constantly fluctuates and you have to reposition and readjust to create the best possible experience.
