Why is the Ukrainian counter-offensive so slow?

Why is the counter-offensive taking longer than imagined? The Counter-offensive is being fought with weapons cobbled together by partners. It is on a timeline, but without appropriate weapons, the deadline is deadly. Why is the counter-offensive happening now without the appropriate aircraft? What will change when they get the appropriate tools? This is the lesson of WWI.
