Definition:
Stromatolites or stromatoliths are layered sedimentary formations that are created mainly by photosynthetic microorganisms such as cyanobacteria, sulfate-reducing bacteria, and Pseudomonadota.
These microorganisms produce adhesive compounds that cement sand and other rocky materials to form mineral "microbial mats".
