The history of razors dates back to ancient Egypt, where solid gold and copper razors have been found in tombs dating back to the 4th millennium BC.
In the 17th century, the first straight razor was invented in Sheffield, England, made of steel and exported to the Gulf of Finland.
The first known manufacturer of straight razors as we know them today was Benjamin Huntsman.
Before the advent of razors, hair was sometimes removed using two shells to pull the hair out or using water and a sharp tool. Copper razors were invented around 3000 BC, and the idea of an aesthetic approach to personal hygiene may have begun at this time.
The Roman historian Livy reported that the razor was introduced in ancient Rome in the 6th century BC by the legendary king Lucius Tarquinius Priscus.
Shaving did not become customary until the 5th century BCE.
