Trump Indicted by Special Council Jack Smith

Federal prosecutors are investigating Trump’s attempts to subvert the results of the 2020 election, including his role in the Capitol insurrection on Jan. 6, 2021. As with the classified documents probe, special counsel Jack Smith is leading this investigation. Prosecutors are examining how Trump and his allies sought to cast doubt on Biden’s electoral victory and then encouraged a violent mob to attack the Capitol. They also are investigating whether Trump and his aides committed wire fraud or violated other federal laws by raising money through a political action committee based on false claims of widespread voter fraud. On July 18, 2023, Trump said in a social media post that he received a “target letter” in the investigation — a sign that an indictment is likely imminent.
