Scuba Diver Swims With World's Largest Wolf Eel

Many people are frightened of eels because of they look and move like snakes. Eels are not snakes – they are actually fish and live in holes or caves. Diver Sean Smyrichinsky shows off for the cameras the huge wolf eel he nursed back to health for over a year. What an incredible bond that has been formed!

The grown wolf eels are curious and are rarely aggressive, but they are capable of inflicting painful bites on humans. Although as we can see, that is clearly not the case in this video. Quite the opposite, in fact. The male and female may pair for life and inhabit a cave together; the two watch their eggs together and one always stays behind when the other leaves to feed. This just shows that besides appearances, these animals have a loving and nurturing nature.

This eel-like fish feeds on crustaceans, sea urchins, mussels, clams and some fishes, crushing them with its strong jaws. Luckily for our diver here, they were not in the mood for human bites.

Although some people confuse them with true eels, they are different in multiple aspects – wolf eels have paired gill slits and pectoral fins. Another curiosity is that when they are young, their color is orange. Orange wolf eel babies, how cool is that?
