In this video, we discuss an important public awareness campaign launched by Veterans Affairs officials. They are urging veterans to sign up for new military toxic exposure benefits before the approaching August deadline for retroactive payouts.
The centerpiece of this initiative is the Summer Vet Fest, which is part of a significant 11.4 million dollar project associated with the Comprehensive Toxics Act, also known as the PACT Act. The PACT Act holds the potential to provide new healthcare and disability benefits to a substantial number of veterans residing in the United States.
Under the PACT Act, veterans can qualify for presumptive benefit status for various illnesses linked to burn pit exposure during the Gulf War, the war in Afghanistan, and the war in Iraq. This includes 12 types of cancer and 12 respiratory illnesses. Veterans who served in Vietnam may also be eligible for benefits related to hypertension and monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS). Additionally, those who served in specific locations in the 1960s and early 1970s can receive compensation for radiation-related illnesses.
In this video, we highlight the urgency emphasized by VA Secretary Denis McDonough, who is committed to ensuring that eligible veterans and survivors across America receive the healthcare and benefits they deserve. The Summer Vet Fest aims to educate veterans, their families, and survivors about the available benefits and encourages them to apply without delay.
We provide insights into the timeline of the PACT Act, including the fact that veterans who applied for benefits within one year of the bill signing may qualify for retroactive benefits. However, those who enroll after August 9th, 2023, will only receive retroactive payouts from their date of filing.
Our video emphasizes the importance of the July outreach campaign, as filing before the August 9th deadline enables veterans to potentially receive significantly higher payouts over the past 12 months. We also highlight previous successful outreach efforts, such as the impactful PACT Act Week of Action held in December.
To spread awareness, Veterans Affairs officials have planned various initiatives, including online advertisements, public service announcements, and events across all 50 states, as well as Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico. These events provide veterans with opportunities to apply for PACT Act benefits, enroll in VA healthcare, undergo screenings for toxic exposure injuries, and gain comprehensive knowledge about available VA services.
