Walt Disney Pictures and Pixar Animation Studios collaborated on the 2006 American computer-animated road comedy movie Cars. Directed and co-written by John Lasseter from a screenplay by Dan Fogelman, it was Pixar's final independently-produced film before its purchase by Disney in January 2006. The movie, which features the voices of Owen Wilson, Bonnie Hunt, Larry the Cable Guy, Tony Shalhoub, Cheech Marin, Michael Wallis, George Carlin, Paul Dooley, Jenifer Lewis, Guido Quaroni, Michael Keaton, Katherine Helmond, John Ratzenberger, and Richard Petty, is set in a world where all the people are anthropomorphic talking cars and other vehicles. The voices of race car drivers Michael Schumacher, Mario Andretti, Dale Earnhardt Jr., and Jay Leno (as "Jay Limo") are used.

The movie Cars had its global premiere on May 26, 2006, at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina. It received positive reviews and enjoyed a successful theatrical run when it was released in the United States on June 9, 2006, generating $462.2 million against a $120 million budget. It won the Annie Award for Best Animated Feature and the Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film and was nominated for two Academy Awards, including Best Animated Feature. On November 7, 2006, the movie's DVD release date, and in 2007, its Blu-ray release date.The One Man Band short was the movie's companion piece for both its theatrical and home media releases. A Disney/Pixar film's merchandising surpassed retail sales records, pulling in an estimated $10 billion for five years following the film's debut. The movie was dedicated to Joe Ranft, who also served as co-writer and co-director who died in a vehicle accident while the movie was being made.
